What Could These Eye Problems Mean?

October 19, 2022

At the office of Drs. Chandler & Davis, your eyes are as important to us as they are to you. We know that your eyes are your windows to the world. Our high-tech, cutting-edge diagnostic equipment will provide an overall view of the health of your eyes as well as provide you with precise prescriptions for eyeglasses and contact lenses. We will address any health concerns you have with your eyes and explain in detail what impact they could have on your vision.

Here are some conditions that can affect your eyes.

Burning. Eyes can feel this sensation when they are tired or have been aggravated by smoke, dust, allergies or environmental pollutants. There’s also the possibility of an accumulation of bacteria, called blepharitis, which elicits flakes on your eyelids. Or, your eyes might not be producing good-quality tears or a sufficient amount.

Puffiness. Allergies, a mild infection, bumps on your eyelids or pinkeye are the usual suspects. The swelling often disappears on its own but may need treatment, depending on the cause and how long it lasts.

A lump. It could be a stye (a sore protuberance under your lid or on your lash line caused by bacteria) or a chalazion (a bulge due to a clogged oil gland). Holding a warm washcloth on your eye for 10 to 15 minutes up to five times a day can provide relief. On the other hand, yellow spots on the sclera (white part of your eye) are probably a pinguecula (growths of protein, fat or calcium). Apterygium (fleshy tissue) that grows over the cornea is usually caused by exposure to the UV rays from the sun. If it doesn’t bother you or inhibit your vision, there’s usually no need for treatment, except for UV protection.
