Treating Presbyopia

November 24, 2020

Growing older is a natural part of life and is filled with many rewarding as well as challenging experiences. However, with age there are also changes that can affect your vision. Many people over 40 begin to experience difficulty seeing objects close up, and develop a condition called presbyopia. At the office of Drs. Chandler & Davis, we’ll perform a visual acuity test, examine your eye’s anatomy, and discuss any symptoms you’re experiencing. Presbyopia can easily be treated so that you can once again enjoy reading with ease.

Do you suddenly find yourself holding books much further from eyes when you’re reading or find your eyes get tired when working on tasks at a close distance? If so, it’s time to schedule an eye exam and discuss these symptoms with an eye care professional. Presbyopia causes objects that are close to your eyes to appear blurry, and may be accompanied by eyestrain, fatigue and headaches. To accurately diagnose presbyopia, we’ll perform a visual acuity test and perform a comprehensive assessment of your vision and eye health. As skilled providers of care, we offer a number of effective treatments to help people affected by presbyopia see clearly at all distances. Reading glasses are a common course of treatment. Single vision reading glasses may be worn only when you’re reading or doing work that is close up, and should be taken off for driving and other activities that require you to see at a distance. Half-eye reading glasses allow you to look down through the lens to see objects close up and look over the top of the lens to see at a distance. If you already wear prescription glasses, bifocals or progressive lens may be most effective and convenient. Bifocal lenses are divided to improve near vision in lower portion and distance vision in the upper portion. Progressive lenses are similar to bifocals but the transition between the portions of the lenses is more subtle and there is no visible line in the lens. Bifocal, multifocal and monovision contact lenses are also available to correct presbyopia for those who prefer not to wear glasses. You can rely on our office to guide you on the best options available for your individual needs.
